New leaders – workload and team building analysis

Client: Melbourne Polytechnic, Dr Nicky Van Der Bergh, Director

Challenge: The Melbourne Polytechnic Student Acquisitions team faced a challenge where several team members had been promoted to leadership roles within the unit. The challenge was to help these new leaders, as well as the whole team develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the team, improve their communication skills, and manage conflict effectively. Additionally, they needed to be inspired to continue developing as leaders and as a broader team so they could keep delivering great outcomes for students. Gov Insights were tasked to develop the beginnings of a new, supportive culture and to provide the team with the tools they needed for ongoing success.

How we helped: Gov Insights used the Core Strengths assessment to identify the team's individual communication and conflict management styles. We spent significant time working on team communication, especially in a post-COVID working environment, and conducted a series of workshops to help the new leaders develop their leadership and coaching skills. We provided guidance on how to build and maintain positive relationships within the team, and how to develop a growth mindset. Our approach saw the team create a stronger sense of self-awareness, build trust, and work together towards common goals. This targeted intervention and support helped the team overcome these challenges and support a growing positive culture.
